Garage door repairs
Broken garage door spring.
A loud bang from the garage, then a door that feels far too heavy. Springs hold the door’s weight, so leave it and call us.

What it usually means
Torsion and extension springs carry the whole weight of the door, so the opener or your arm only has to guide it. When one breaks, the door becomes dead weight: an opener will strain or stop, and lifting it by hand can be dangerous. A broken spring is also the most common reason a door drops suddenly.
What to do right now
Stop using the door
- Leave the door where it is. Don’t try to lift it or run the opener.
- Keep people, pets and cars clear, especially if the door is part-open.
- Don’t touch the spring, cables or brackets: they’re under extreme tension.
- Call us on 09 550 8868 and tell us the door type and roughly how wide it is.
SafetyGarage door springs and cables are under extreme tension. Adjusting or releasing them is a job for a trained technician.
What we do
We replace springs in matched pairs where that’s the right call, re-tension the door, check the cables and rollers, and test the opener’s force and safety reverse before we leave. Garador designs its springs to exceed the standard’s 20,000 cycles, so a broken spring on an older door usually means it has simply done its miles.
