Garage doors near the coast: what to choose
Salt air is hard on steel and harder on window insets. What Garador advises for homes near the sea.
The short answer
- Garador’s pre-painted, zinc-based steel is made for New Zealand conditions.
- Skip window insets close to the sea, as Garador advises.
- Wash the door every 14 days near the coast, and keep up the service schedule.
The steel
Garador doors use New Zealand-made Colorsteel® and pre-painted zinc-based steel, chosen because New Zealand-made painted steel consistently tests best for colour durability, which counts for a home within sight of the sea.
Windows
New Zealand noteGarador does not recommend window insets in coastal or corrosive environments, because of the higher potential for corrosion around the window cut-outs.
If you want light in a beach-side garage, talk to us about a glazed VL Designer Door or a different layout before cutting windows into a steel panel.
Care
Wash the door with clean water and a cloth every 14 days, paying attention to the face under the door head and, on a roller door, the inside over the top of the curtain, where rain never reaches. Never wash the opener. Keep to the service schedule: within 12 months, then every two years.
Warranty
Garador publishes coastal warranty conditions alongside its standard warranty documents.
